OKinastar is located in the North East of England and first became interested in Alaskan Malamutes when coming up against them in the show ring in 1995. At the time my family owned Hungarian Kuvasz and both breeds, being new to the UK, competed against each other in the Any Variety Classes. It wasn’t until 2004 that Niya came to live with us. I promised her breeder that I would show and work, and that’s how I became the handler of an Alaskan Malamute.
I first handled at a Championship Show at the age of 12 when I took Toby (Vasart Tobias Of Time), a Hungarian Kuvasz, into a Rare Breed Class at Blackpool Championship Show. He was placed 4th out of a class of 14 entries. Since then I have had many more years of experience handling in breed shows. Growing up in a doggy household meant that, before owning and handling my own Alaskan Malamutes, I have trained and competed in Obedience and Agility at competition level with Border Collies for many years.
My years of training were certainly put to the test when first owning a Malamute but I love and enjoy their company and definitely wouldn’t be without them. It wasn’t too long after Niya joined us that Tala arrived, as many in the breed already know, Malamutes are addictive!
